Stornoway’s Christmas tree has been donated by a local resident.

The spruce tree was threatening to fall on the home of Annie Mary Macleod in Sand Street.

It had been planted by the 84-year-old’s late husband David S Macleod in the mid 1980s under the Integrated Development Programme (IDP) to encourage crofters to plant shelter belts.

The tree now takes takes pride of place as the town’s official Christmas tree in Perceval Square.

A Stornoway Amenity Trust spokesperson said: “The tree looks great in Perceval Square for Christmas and it will be cut up for logs later on. Many thanks to the Macleods of Sand Street.”

The tree will be illuminated at a switch-on ceremony on Friday evening.
