Stornoway Christmas lights switch-on ceremony is taking place on Friday 9th December.

The event, organised by Stornoway Amenity Trust, kicks off at 6.30pm in the town’s Perceval Square.

Point youngster Alice Macmillan - who won numerous prizes for singing and music at the Royal National Mod - will perform the switch-on.

The Christmas Message will be delivered by Mr Iain Macmillian, principal of the Lews Castle.

Santa will be in his grotto in Pointers. The fair will be based in the Fisherman's car park while local charities will have stalls in the town hall.

Prizes will be awarded for the best shop or hotel Christmas window display. Judging takes place on the Tuesday of that week with the winers revealed n the night.

The George Newhall Shield will be presented to the individual or group that has done the most to promote Stornoway in 2016.

Christmas music will be provided by the Lewis and Harris Junior Concert Band, who will lead the ceilidh dancing in the Civic Square. There will also be community carol singing and Lewis Pipeband will also be performing.

Lewis Pipe Band will be in attendance to wow the crowds with some of their award-winning playing.

The main road will be closed to traffic from North Beach Street to the Scotland Street corner from 6pm - 8.30pm on the night.

The Christmas Santa Dash is organised for the same night, with runners setting off at 6.20pm from Lazy Corner on South Beach Quay.

A Christmas tree will be erected in Perceval Square
