A group of Lewis women have made nearly sixty quilts for charity in a 24-hour sewing
bee, believed to be the first time such an event has been undertaken on the island.
Most of the bedding will be shipped out by Lewis Blythswood to poverty stricken elderly
people and orphans in Moldova via.
Some will be used as lap quilts for patients in the Bethesda cancer hospice in Stornoway.
Co-ordinator Chris Hammacott said the event was so very successfully there are plans
to repeat it in 2015.
Ms Hammacott said: “It went very well. We made 59 quilts in all with about 35 people
helping out.
“Hopefully next year the event will be bigger.
“We would like to thank the lodge for letting us use their building - it made the
whole difference.”
The quiltathon saw a hard core, sleepless seven ladies busily sewing away overnight
from 6pm Friday until Saturday evening in the Masonic Lodge in Stornoway.
Sewer Elizabeth Whyte said: “It was hard work but great fun. We were laughing, joking,
keeping one another going and sewing hard.”
The Carloway and Shawbost mills donated Harris Tweed Tweed while islanders sent in
fabric from old curtains and bedding.
