Five workers have been treated for carbon monoxide poisoning after an incident at industrial premises in Stornoway.

An ambulance attended the engineering workshop on Seaforth Road after some staff fell very ill with similar symptoms at the same time.

Two fire crews and police were despatched to the building after ambulance personnel identified the casualties were affected by dangerous fumes.

Four men and a woman were believed to have shown signs of gas poisoning.

The Health and Safety Executive has launched an investigation into the incident which occurred on Wednesday afternoon.

It is believed investigators are looking into whether fumes leaked into the premises from an external source.

Carbon monoxide is often called the silent killer as the highly poisonous gas has no smell or taste. Symptoms are similar to flu or food poisoning - headaches, dizziness and nausea.

Casualties may become breathlessness and collapse or lose consciousness.
