Man in court over car crash               4/8/14

A man who drove through a red light and smashed into another car has appeared in court.

George Lea Bingham, 63 Newmarket, Lewis, was convicted of careless driving by causing a collision when he failed to stop at the junction by Goathill Road and Matheson Road in Stornoway in September last year.

Two people were treated by paramedics at the scene and later taken to hospital.

Bingham injured himself and the female passenger in the other car.

Both vehicles were damaged in the smash causing a quantity of oil to be spilled on the roadway.

Bingham was fined £250 - reduced from £300 due to his early plea. The fine was converted to a community payback order meaning he will have to undertake 40 hours of unpaid community service work in lieu of a financial penalty.
