A Flybe operated plane which veered off a taxiway onto the grass is grounded at Stornoway Airport.

The Saab 2000 with 32 people on board hit a light unit at the edge and went off the paved surface as it was slowly steering to the main runway.

Fire crews from the airport attended the incident on Sunday evening.

The Glasgow bound flight - operated under a Flybe / Eastern Airways joint venture - was cancelled.

The aircraft was said to be slightly listing to one side after slowly rolling onto the grass.

A Flybe spokesperson explained the aircraft wheels “made contact on turning with one of the taxiway lights” and was deflected onto the grass.

“All 29 passengers were disembarked by the aircraft steps without further incident and were bussed back to the terminal.

“Flybe provided overnight accommodation for those requiring it and all were re-accommodated on the next available flight on an alternate aircraft this (Mon) morning.

“Flybe and Eastern Airways sincerely apologise to its passengers for the inconvenience experienced the safety of its passengers and crew is the airlines’ number one priority at all times.”

An airport tractor vehicle later towed the plane to outside the Gaydon hanger.

The aircraft is grounded until it passes an engineering inspection.

A spokesperson for airfield operator HIAL said: “We are working closely with the airline to ensure the aircraft is safely returned to service as soon as possible. The plane is currently secure and airport operations continue to operate normally.”
