Stormy weather for Sunday

9 January 2016

The Met Office has issued a yellow "be aware" alert of severe gales forecast to hit Lewis and Harris and northern Scotland during Sunday.

Stormy conditions are expected off the coast and in some exposed sites with the potential for gusts up to 60 to 70 mph in the northern part of the Western Isles.

North Uist which is on the edge of the warning area may experience a force eight gale for a period.

Conditions will be worsened by rain or thundery showers and hill snow.

The Met Office said people should be aware of potential disruption to transport, with a number of factors contributing to the unpleasant, potentially hazardous, conditions.

The north easterly direction of the wind is “rather unusual” for the time of year and combined with rain and hill snow, some impacts seem quite likely, said forecasters.

Some places may see in excess of 40 mm of rainfall.
