Storm to hit Western Isles 2/2/14
Wind gusts up to hurricane force are set to batter exposed areas of the Western Isles
on Monday.
South easterly gusts exceeding 70mph are expected in places while an extreme high
tide will peak between 8am and after 9am.
The storm will push wild seas to a higher level than normally expected. Violent winds
and heavy rain may be experienced in squalls.
The worst of the weather is likely to affect Uist, Benbecula and Barra.
A Met Office warning stated: “Southeasterly winds will strengthen in the early hours
of Monday morning to reach gale to severe gale force.
“Coastal and hill top gusts of 50-60 mph are expected quite widely and perhaps 70
mph over the Western Isles of Scotland, whilst inland gusts are likely to reach 45-50
mph.
“High tides and large waves will lead to the risk of minor coastal flooding, mainly
due to wave and spray overtopping, whilst a spell of heavy rain is likely before
winds come down.
“The gales will ease across Northern Ireland and Southwest Scotland in the early
afternoon and over the Hebrides by the evening.
“The public are advised to be aware of the risk of disruption.”
