Storm surge could cause flooding     2/2/14

Environment agency Sepa has issued a flood alert for the Western Isles for Monday.

The alert stressed: “Gale force winds later on Monday will result in high waves leading to the potential for wave and spray overtopping in coastal areas and across causeways.

Sepa said there is a medium likelihood of minor coastal flooding

A storm surge caused by very strong winds pushing a very high tide is expected.

South easterly gusts exceeding 70 mph are to hit in places while an extreme high tide will peak between 8am and 9.10am.

Waves are forecast to break over coastal roads and causeways possibly resulting in route closures for periods.

The worst of the weather is likely to affect the Southern Isles.

On Lewis, the Bràighe road linking Stornoway and Point is directly in line of the onshore gale.

Police and Western Isles Council staff will be patrolling vulnerable locations.
