Heavy winds batter west coast               26/1/14

Winds gusting up to 70mph battered the west coast today

The Met office warned severe gale force winds would continue into this morning (Mon) with the potential for gusts of 80 mph at times.

The third day of bad weather in the Western Isles has badly hit transport services with all the bigger ferries stuck in harbour

Caledonian Macbrayne is despatching a special ferry to try and steam through an expected heavy swell to get supplies to Barra on Monday.

However, she is liable to disruption in the ongoing weather conditions and will not call in at South Uist.

Some mobile phone masts were knocked out on Lewis leaving people without a signal.

Powercuts affected parts of South Uist.

Waves pushed by the southerly gale crashed over exposed causeways in the islands.
