Storm set to hit Western Isles                   27/12/11

The Western Isles are forecasted to be lashed by a violent storm heading in from the Atlantic.

South Uist and Barra are due to bear the heaviest brunt of the extreme weather.  Some structural damage and power cuts are likely.

The Met Office has issued an amber alert of severe weather for western, southern and central Scotland.

High southerly winds overnight are forecasted to hit gusts of up to around 90mph on Wednesday afternoon.

A Met office spokesperson said: “Very strong winds will affect northern Britain on Wednesday, including the populated Central Lowlands of Scotland.

“Gusts of 60 to 70 mph are expected, with 80 to 90 mph possible in exposed coastal areas of the west. The public should be aware that this could cause disruption to transport.”

A number of cargo vessels were hugging the east coast of the Hebrides to gain some respite from the rolling swell as they scurried for shelter through the Minch.

Travellers were warned that ferry services could be seriously disrupted.

Cal Mac advised sailings between Stornoway and Ullapool would be cancelled on Wednesday due to the adverse weather. The Stornoway freight ferry service was also put off in advance.

There will be no ferry services out of Lochboisdale and Castlebay. Intending passengers are advised to rebook. Inter-island Western Isles ferries are liable to be cancelled at short notice.
