Hundreds of pounds worth of wind damage was caused by Storm Gertrude at Maybury Garden Centre in Sandwick on Lewis.

Irene Smith (pictured above) of the garden centre was helpless to do anything as fierce gusts ripped the cover of a polytunnel, not long replaced after being wrecked in severe weather last year. Plants were strewn about their yard and roof guttering damaged by the winds.

Mrs Smith said: “This is just saddening. I slept through the storm in the night but then (my husband) David and I had to watch on as the cover went. I think it will cost hundreds of pounds to replace.”

She added: "We just watched it take off. When you see it going your heart just drops. More work again, more expense."

Meanwhile, other storm damage included a smash a car window in Tong, Lewis, while numerous wheelie bins and unsecured items were flung about.

All Western Isles schools and council-run nurseries were shut all day.

Morning bus services were cancelled while Stornoway library, the council offices and the island sports centres delayed opening until the worst of the storm passed.
