Stormy weather hitting the Western Isles will last all week as a series of gales moves in from the Atlantic.

The Met Office has issued a new severe weather warning as a deep depression, now named Storm Barbara, will pass close to the northwest of Scotland on Friday and Saturday.

South to southwesterly winds will increase earliest across the west of the warning area early on Friday, before the strongest winds develop across western then northern Scotland later on Friday and overnight into Saturday.

Gusts of 80 mph are likely quite widely, with westerly winds gusting to 90 mph likely across parts of western and northern Scotland later on Friday and overnight into Saturday. Winds will then ease on Saturday morning.

The Met Office said people should be aware of the potential for some structural damage as well as disruption to power supplies and travel, with restrictions on bridges and disruption to ferries.
