Several roads in the Western Isles have been closed due to flooding or flying debris from the sea during Storm Ashley.

Coastal roads have been affected by the low pressure system increasing the height of incoming high tide, and fierce winds driving waves over seawalls.

Baleshare, North Ford, South Ford and Eriskay causeways are cut off over the high tide period.

The road at Stinky Bay is shut with coastguards urging motorists not to attempt to drive through as the route by the bay is impassable and the “considerable amount of flying debris” creating a danger.

The Bràighe roadway in Lewis is also affected by waves coming over the sea wall.

The Commitee Road and Clachan junction in North Uist are also impacted by weather.

A safety watch is being maintained by Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, HM Coastguard, and police at different hazard spots.

Police Scotland is appealing to islanders to consider delaying their journey until the storm abates.

The force said: “A number of causeways have been closed throughout the Western Isles due to the current weather conditions.

“Police Scotland would like to re-emphasise the request to avoid unnecessary travel.”
