The was significant disruption in the Western Isles when Storm Abigail battered the islands from Thursday into Friday.

 

The first storm to be officially named by the Met Office, brought brought winds over 80mph.

 

All island schools and nurseries were shut, there were widespread powercuts as well as road closures.

 

Ferries were cancelled in wild seas whipped up by strong winds.

 

Bus services were suspended at 6pm on Thursday and did not get back to normal until mid-morning Friday.

 

Thousands of homes lost electricity supplies overnight. with Lewis extensively affected by lightning strikes on powerlines.

 

Drivers of high-sided vehicles were urged not to use the Scalpay bridge and exposed causeway.

With high winds affecting ambulances driving over the Clisham, coastguards transported a patient from Harris to the Stornoway hospital.

Most roads in the Southern Isles were affected by high winds and water.

The Baleshare road and the Vatersay causeway were closed for a period. The Bràighe roadway at Point, was also shut around high tide.  Later, it partially re-opened with vehicles escorted in a single-file convoy.

Ferries did not sail during the storm and rough seas continue to cancel or disrupt services on Friday.

 

Many shops, banks and offices closed early on Thursday as the weather worsened. Council run libraries, sports and leisure facilities shut at 4pm.

 

Some health clinics were cancelled.

 

Barra bore the brunt of high winds from Thursday resulting in the closure of Castlebay School for two days. The Barra air service was cancelled on Thursday. The island's GP surgery closed early and ferries were disrupted.
