A violent storm is forecast to hit the Western Isles from tonight.

Winds will begin to increase late on Thursday to give a period of very strong westerly winds across the Western Isles.

The Met Office warns a rapidly deepening depression over the western Atlantic is expected to move quickly northeast, to be just north of Scotland by the early hours of Friday.

This will bring severe gales or violent storms and perhaps hurricane force winds, accompanied by some very large waves affecting the north.

A second area of low pressure is likely to bring a repeat performance during Friday night.

People should be prepared for the potential for disruption to transport as well as power supplies and the possibility of structural damage.

Very large waves may also lead to dangerous conditions along some coasts.
