Police are appealing for information after a barn owl was stolen.

The six-year-old bird of prey called Scamp was removed from his aviary in Callanish on Lewis last week.

The owl was born and bred in captivity and has never hunted in the wild in its life.

Investigating officer PC Katy Hebditch said: "This would be an unusual crime for the Western Isles and so I am appealing to anyone who may have any information or knowledge to come forward.

"Theft, whether it be of animals or possessions, will not be tolerated and we will use all available resources available to us to detect those responsible.

"If anyone saw or heard anything unusual I would urge them to get in touch."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.

Information can also be given completely anonymously via the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
