Highlands and Islands MSP, David Stewart, has been appointed to a role in Scottish Labour's revamped line-up at Holyrood.

Kezia Dugdale - who won the leadership race for the party - has announced her new team.

It has been tasked with revitalising the party after losing all but one of its 41 Scottish seats at Westminster.

David Stewart becomes a member of the Environmental Justice Team led by Sarah Boyack MSP.

The brief covers transport, environment, rural affairs, land reform, climate change and energy.

Members of the new team will no longer simply shadow SNP government ministers, but will instead focus more on communicating Labour values to the public.

Mr Stewart said his role will allow him to work on issues fundamental to the Highlands and Islands.

He added: “I am also very interested in continuing my dialogue with local authorities, specifically around the Our Islands, Our Future consultation and will continue to work with both island and mainland authorities to develop policy that will deliver a strong voice for these communities.”
