An ambitious programme of events will mark the opening of the new Newton yacht marina in Stornoway and the port’s maritime links.

Steòrnabhagh air a’ Chuan (Stornoway on the Ocean) festival will hold sailing events, workshops, races and ceilidhs offering a vibrant Hebridean cultural experience during the last week in August.

Local produce will be promoted and the event aims to highlight the exploring nature, music, food and people important to the islands’s maritime influence.

Discussions are underway looking at linking the three day event with the Stornoway Carnival.

In addition, the outline timetable proposes to highlight maritime skills opportunities for young people.

The festival idea originated from the desire to link the completion of Newton marina with Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters 2020.

EventScotland has awarded £33,500 to Stornoway Port Authority and the comhairle - which are jointly organising the programme.

The islands’ traditional links to the sea offer an opportunity for an Outer Hebrides programme with strong appeal for tourists whilst also being highly relevant to island residents.

Meanwhile, a new joint regatta will take place between Castlebay and Lochbosidale marinas on 15th August. Events include inter-island sailing race and onshore activities in each community.

The St Kilda Challenge yacht race sets off from Lochmaddy in June while the three-day Feis Mara na Hearadh maritime festival kicks off on 30 July.

From the Butt to Barra, a series of activities looking at marine activity and the coastal environment will be shared across schools as well as arts, heritage and community hubs throughout the islands. Young people will be at the heart of many of the performances.
