The first competitive yacht race around St Kilda is to take place next summer.

In June, a fleet of sailing boats will cover around 100 nautical miles in 24 hours, racing from Lochmaddy to the archipelago, using the islands as a turning point before returning to the finish line.

A spectacular parade of sail to the start line in the Sound of Harris will take place before the race begins.

Ashore on North Uist, there will be a selection of festival activities in support of the event which is organised by Comann na Mara - the Society of the Sea.

Caledonian MacBrayne is sponsoring the race.

2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the designation of St Kilda's dual World Heritage Site status.
