Bad weather has forced nine swimmers to postpone their planned swim to St Kilda for the third time.

The charity swimmers were due to set off on the 60-mile relay swim from Huishinish in Harris after heavy waves receded on Friday morning.

The feat has never been done before but bad weather has foiled the group’s attempts to set a record.

A weather window of relatively calm conditions closed in earlier than expected.

Forecasted seas conditions means they risk encountering a heavy swell before they could reach St Kilda on Sunday.

In addition, strong winds are expected to increase to gale force strength off St Kilda on Saturday and Sunday.

On the group’s webpage, organiser Colin Macleod said: “Am afraid to say that we've had to postpone the swim again as the weather window has closed in to only 24 hours of calm seas.

“This is not enough for us to complete the swim.

“There's the possibility of good weather on Tuesday next week to Friday which we're monitoring with the intention of starting on Tuesday morning.”

Adverse weather thwarted plans to set off earlier this month.

In May, seas were too rough to embark on the feat.

They first attempted the feat last year but were forced to abandon the course after reaching about a third of the way when heavy swells were too hazardous for their support kayakers.

The group is fundraising for four good causes - Yorkhill Children’s Charity, the Leanne Fund, The Fishermen’s Mission and the Aberlour Child Care Trust.
