The UK government has been urged to scrap SSE's monopoly over home heating prices.

The electricity company is the sole provider of Total Heating Total Control tariffs for homes which use storage heaters in the Highlands and Islands.

This means that islanders are forced to pay whatever rate SSE dictates. People on THTC are unable to switch to cheaper prices which could cost them hundreds of pounds each year.

Around 110,000 SSE customers in the north of Scotland are affected.

Angus McCormack of the Western Isles Poverty Action Group said: " No wonder the Fuel Poverty level in the Western Isles stands at 71%.

"I am calling on the Prime Minister Theresa May to intervene and address this anomaly with immediate effect.

"The Prime Minister has stated that her government is intent on ‘fighting injustices.’

"The monopoly resting with SSE over THTC in the Western Isles is an injustice that needs addressing now."
