Energy firm SSE has been criticised for withdrawing discount tariffs just ten days after their launch.

The short-lived offer was 5p per unit cheaper than its standard price.

Another brief scheme for 12 month fixed price for homes using Total Heating Total Control storage heaters was significantly lower than the current tariff.

SSE says the tariff is no longer available and was only available to a limited number of customers.

The few households which took immediate advantage of the schemes could see bills falling by up to £400 over the year.

The Comhairle is to raise the issue with energy regulator, Ofgem.

Comhairle leader, Angus Campbell, said it is a "bizarre situation."

He said: "Effectively SSE offered new reduced tariffs for a limited period of time and those who benefited from these were not those most in need of assistance.

"Is this appropriate practice and behaviour for a company?"
