Sports personality to open new all-weather facility   18/4/14

Plans for a modern indoor synthetic pitch at Back Football and Recreation Club on Lewis have stepped up a gear.

By winter, a state-of-the-art 3G artificial pitch will be installed under a fully covered building in Coll.

A high profile sports personality is earmarked to officially open the new all-weather facility in late summer. Their name will be announced closer to the time.

Representatives from the various funding agencies which are backing the development - including the Scottish Government, sportscotland, Western Isles Council and LEADER - be invited to the opening event.

The roof and covered building is already erected and the club is now tendering for the artificial pitch.

Funding of £193,750 for the new synthetic surface and indoor equipment came from the Big Lottery Fund.

The sports centre is designed so the pitch can be sectioned off by netting to allow up to four groups to play sports at the same time.

When the doors open to the public later this year, the facility will allow outdoor sports to be played inside, sheltered from wind and rain.
