Councillors are to consider awarding over £20,000 funding towards island sports councils.

Lewis and Harris Sports Council has submitted a bid for £13,000 while Uist and Barra Sports Council is applying for £8,500.

The grant aid would help develop existing and create new sports clubs; as well as provide training, competitions and events, and equipment alongside running costs.

Island sports councils apply to the Comhairle’s grant aid programme for overall funding which then enables the organisations to provide a range of grant options for affiliated clubs and associations.

A report to go before council members next week highlights its success, stating: “This devolved decision-making process continues to work well for sport at a grass roots level and enables volunteers involved in local sport to set priorities.”
