Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Education, Sport and Children’s Services committee has recommended to offer vulnerable or "at risk" children free access to island sports centres.

The proposal is set to be approved by the full comhairle next week.

A number of third sector bodies, charitable organisations and council services approached the sport and health section  with the request for young people and their carers or mentors.

Committee chair Angus McCormack said: “Many of these young people would benefit from increased physical activity opportunities, diversionary activities and improved social networks and I am pleased that we have been able to support this proposal.”
