Islanders may have to pay more for monthly membership fees at sport facilities across the Western Isles, under the Comhairle's budget proposals.

The council could gain £86,000 more income through increased monthly fees for sport and health facilities.

An extra £72,000 could be received this year with the proposed hike taking in a further additional £14,000 in 2017.

The current 'Slainte Mhath' scheme has 2626 members - including families/individuals - but the charges have stayed the same since it was established in 2010.

Though a price rise risks losing membership, a report says this impact is "likely to be low as the scheme will remain competitively priced and affordable."
