Police day of action on speeding   22/2/12

Northern Constabulary officers are targeting drivers ignoring speed limits as part of a day of action in the Western Isles today.

Police say that drivers who speeding or driving inappropriately are risking their own and others lives.

The day of action is part of the force's ongoing commitment to the improvement of safety on Highlands and Islands roads.

Head of Road Policing, Inspector Derek Paterson said: "Speeding is one of the main causal factors in road traffic collisions across the Highlands and Islands

"Those who exceed the speed limit and those who drive at inappropriate speeds for the prevailing circumstances not only risk their own lives but they risk the safety of other road users and that includes pedestrians and cyclist who can be particularly vulnerable."
