Islanders on Barra will continue to receive vital eyecare, thanks to the help of Castlebay Fire Station and Specsavers.

Recent flood damage to the regular eye clinic venue at Castlebay Hall risked meant cancelling the opticians’ visit as no alternative base was available.

The team at Castlebay Fire Station answered the eye experts’ call for help by offering their station as a base for the mobile clinic.

To say thank you, the store has donated £280 for the fire station to give to the Fire Fighters’ Charity.

Gary Wood, director of Specsavers in Highlands and Islands, said: ‘Castlebay Hall was the only suitable venue we could find.

“We didn’t want to cancel as it would have left lots of patients without vital eyecare.

‘Thankfully, we received a telephone call from Steve Wilson from the fire station earlier in the month and he has very kindly agreed that our staff can use the station as a base.”
