The Comhairle is looking at axing the use of all itinerant teachers in island primary schools.

This proposal may necessitate compulsory redundancy, councillors will be told at a meeting today.

Some £465,000 could be saved over the next two years by removing the specialist teachers.

The itinerant teachers take gym, music and art classes in primary schools.

Class teachers would face undertaking the responsibility of tutoring the specialist subjects.

In 2013, the Comhairle made a partial u-turn in fully abolishing the service of specialist teachers for young pupils.

They left the service in place for P4-7 classes.

Now, the idea is back on the table as councillors consider what to cut in next year's budget.

A report said: "All primary teaching staff are trained, qualified and GTC registered to teach art, music and PE from nursery

to P7.

"In addition to meeting all experiences and outcomes required by Curriculum for Excellence previous budget choices have reduced itinerant provision in primary and the current policy is to provide limited resource allocated pro rata across all schools in P4 – P7.

"Teachers have had significant opportunities to build their confidence and skills in these areas working alongside itinerant specialists and have themselves been responsible for stages P1 – P3 for a number of years now.

"Most local authorities have withdrawn itinerant specialist provision in primary. In addition, the Comhairle provides significant input in other ways such as active schools, art and music instruction."
