Lewis Presbytery of the Church of Scotland is holding a special presbytery service tonight (Wed) at 7.30pm in St Columba's Church, Stornoway.

Recently the denomination's General Assembly  voted to allow people in same sex civil partnerships to be appointed as ministers and deacons.

A spokesman said: "Many people within the presbytery are hurting and confused following the decisions made by this year's General Assembly in relation to human sexuality and the ministry.

"This will be an opportunity for worship, reflection and fellowship under the leadership of presbytery."

He added: "The purpose of the service is to show solidarity across the presbytery.

"Several ministers of presbytery will participate. Rev Tommy Macneil will preach."

"A statement has been prepared by the presbytery in response to these General Assembly decisions and the statement will be distributed at the service."

Lewis Presbytery is opposed to allowing gay ministers in a same-sex relation being appointed. It believes marriage to be exclusively a union between one man and one woman.
