An islander has been badly injured after being involved in a collision with a car in South Uist.

The 36-year-old casualty was airlifted to hospital in Glasgow late last night.

The woman was walking along the main road at Ardmore, at Iochdar, around 7.30pm.

Police said only one vehicle - a grey coloured Hyundai i30 - was involved.

The car ended up on its side and was later removed.

A Police Scotland spokesman said the casualty suffered “serious but non-life threatening injuries.”

Emergency services attended and the female pedestrian was taken to the Benbecula hospital by ambulance.

The woman - who is believed to be from South Uist - was later flown by helicopter to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

There is no word on her condition.

The road was blocked for three hours.

Police said inquiries into the incident are continuing.
