A young South Uist man has tragically died following a car crash at the weekend.

The 19-year-old - named locally as electronics engineer apprentice Carl Macphee, died in hospital from his injuries, after a car carrying five people apparently overturned and smashed while travelling northward through Daliburgh around 9pm on Saturday night.

Police have yet to confirm the seriousness of the crash.

Carl was rushed to hospital in Balivanich. It is understood an air ambulance was summoned to take him for urgent specialist treatment on the mainland hospital but he died around 1am on Sunday morning before he could be airlifted.

The group in the car were all players for Iochdar Saints Football Club and were returning home following a match in Eriskay when the collision occurred.

The other four men in the mangled car suffered relatively minor injures including the driver who had a head wound.

Carl, nicknamed DooDoos, lived in Rhughasinish in the north end of the island. He worked for Qinetiq at the rocket range.

Police are investigating the crash.
