Highlands and Islands Labour MSP, David Stewart, has written to the cabinet secretary responsible for flood prevention, Roseanna Cunningham, asking her to meet with representatives of the South Uist community to discuss improvements on the South Ford causeway.

This is the stretch where five people were tragically killed during the 2005 storm.

A feasibility study, funded by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and Storas Uibhist is assessing the viability of creating a 250 metre wide opening in the causeway to reduce the risk of flooding.

David Stewart said: “Local representatives are understandably very eager to ensure funding is awarded for the required works to make sure the tragic events of 2005 are not repeated.

"While I appreciate that the feasibility study is not yet completed, I have asked the cabinet secretary to consider visiting the area in the near future to see the situation for herself, and to meet with the community to, first and foremost, hear their concerns with a view to committing Scottish Government funds for these works."
