South Uist flooding concerns              16/5/14

Following a meeting this week in Iochdar, South Uist,  about how to prevent future flooding in Uist, Western Isles SNP MSP Alasdair Allan has taken up a number of issues around drainage with both the Comhairle and the Government.

Drainage and flooding in South Uist are ongoing concerns and the meeting was an opportunity to establish how progress can be made on protecting houses and croftland in the area.

Alasdair Allan commented: “Having visited various sites of concern, it is clear that the drainage depends on an infrastructure much of which is in various states of decay. Multiple different bodies have responsibility for the various sites.

"It is essential that these bodies come together to agree on appropriate measures which will provide a solution, and I will be looking to participate in this process.

“While some projects, such as any alteration to the South Ford causeway or rebuilding of the Gualain which are to be considered by the Comhairle, will require very significant capital and are not expected in a short timeframe, it is clear that there are other measures which can be put in place around Loch Bi to combat the rising levels which are posing an increasing risk to nearby properties.

“I have stressed the urgency, and a need for a collaborative solution, to all bodies responsible.”
