Dead man was hit by a vehicle say police     11/1/12

A man who was found dead by the roadside on South Uist seems likely to have been killed by a vehicle say police. A motorist is talking to police as part of the investigation.

The body of the 49-year-old Archie Steele was discovered on the verge of the main road running through South Uist at Ardmore, between Iochdar and Carnan on Tuesday morning.

Mr Steele’s body was found by the A865 not far from Lovat's Stores at Ardmore around 10am.

A spokesman for Northern Constabulary said: "The death is being treated as a fatal road traffic collision.

"The man is believed to have been struck by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle is assisting police with their enquiries."

It is unclear if Mr Steele, who lived alone at Bornish, nearly ten miles south of the accident spot, had lain unseen on the roadside from the previous afternoon.

Yesterday morning police cordoned off the main road and launched an appeal for information.

Traffic was diverted along the old road which runs parallel to the present double-track carriageway.

Mr Steele was believed to have been last sighted around the area late on Tuesday afternoon.

The road fully re-opened this afternoon following a road accident police investigation into the death.

Officers from the Northern Constabulary road policing unit in Dingwall travelled from the mainland to examine the scene.
