Comunn Eachdraidh Nis (CEN) has been shortlisted in a competition for renewable energy equipment.

The prize of 10 kW, 40 panel, solar power system, would help slash its electricity costs plus reduce its carbon footprint by 3.75 tonnes a year.

The historical society in Ness - which one of the main employers in the area with eight staff  - has to raise £740 per month to pay its energy bills.

A spokesperson said: "That level of expenditure cannot be sustained long term and we have already carried out improvements in an attempt to lower overheads.

"Major insulation work has been carried out and a new heating system is being installed at the moment."

CEN hope to win the solar panels in the regional competition which is decided by public vote.
