A Western Isles social worker has been struck off for serious misconduct, including sending sex texts to a female and breach of trust.

Iain Macaskill of Callanish, Lewis, was sacked by the Comhairle in 2012, following a number of allegations.

Now the profession’s watchdog, Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), said he will not work again as a social worker, following an official hearing.

Mr Macaskill admitting sending some 47 texts -  in one day in August 2010 - from his council work mobile phone to an unidentified female client, known as AA,

He also accepted that between July and September 2012 he sent around 59 text messages of a sexually explicit nature to an unnamed person called CC on his work mobile phone.

Between 12 April  and 1 September 2012, using his work mobile, he had text message conversations with EE discussing his use of illicit drugs.

He also agreed he made a series of texts to arrange the purchase of illegal drugs. The hearing heard this contact was with DD - on the work mobile - on a number of occasions, over 12 months from May 2011. At the time, Mr Macaskill was unaware DD was a former service user.

He was cleared of accusations that he flirted with female client AA, of telling her he had sex with clients previously, and of suggesting to her the pair could have a personal relationship if he was no longer allocated to work with her.

Claims he threaten to use his power to remove AA’s son from her if she told anyone of his relationship with her, were not proven.

The panel said AA did not report any of these allegations until two and a half years after the incidents.  She failed to appear at the hearing to give evidence so there was no opportunity for her claims to be cross-examined.

The watchdog said Mr Macaskill abused the trust of AA and formed an inappropriate personal relationship with her.

It highlighted his “deliberate actions placed himself, service users and members of the public at unnecessary risk of potentially serious harm.”
