An “unavoidable” overspend of £830,000 is forecast to hit the Comhairle’s social work department, according to a council report.

Rising demand for services, new legislation and national policy requirements inflict extra pressure on finances while budgets face being cut.

The ever-increasing number of elderly people needing care means the council has little choice but to provide home care services.

Social work department faces £830,000 overspend

Increased frailty, complexity of care needs and the need to protect residents with dementia from leaving the safety of the premises, requires extra staffing at Comhairle-run care homes.

Some overtime was needed during a norovirus outbreak earlier this year.

Delays in the rollout of community meals has hut the level of anticipated savings. It is also hoped to save money when joint working arrangements are introduced at Barra’s St Brendan’s facility.

Councillors will be given an update of the financial situation this week.
