The newly elected MP, Angus MacNeil,gives his victory speech after being returned to the Westminster Parliament for the third time

The SNP have won the Western Isles seat in the General Election.

The results were announced in the early hours of Friday morning.

Angus MacNeil was elected MP with a majority of 4,102 - over double his 2010 election outcome.

Some 8,662 islanders voted for him while Labour’s Alasdair Morrison received 4,560.

In third place was Mark Brown for the Scottish Conservatives. His 1215 votes were twice as much as their results five years ago.

John Cormack of the Scottish Christian Party received 1045 votes, just three points less than they received in 2005, the last time they stood in a Westminster ballot in the islands.

The Lib Dems took a hammering. The 456 votes for Ruaraidh Ferguson was well down on 1,097 gained in 2010.

Turnout was 73.4% out of a 21769-strong electorate.

There were 44 spoilt ballot slips.
