The SNP has lambasted Labour’s Alasdair Morrison for opposing road equivilant tariff (RET) which has resulted in cheaper ferry fares to the Western Isles.

Mr Morrison attacked the isles’ SNP MP Angis Macneil and MSP  Alasdair Allan for not “joining him to reduce the cost of inter-island ferry travel.”

A SNP spokesperson retorted: "Mr Morrison again shows himself to be an opportunist and years behind the SNP.

“Mr Morrison opposed the introduction of RET while in parliament himself.”

They added: "It is disappointing to find the prospective Labour parliamentary candidate attacking local politicians at a time when Labour leadership have been promising a 'new politics' in Scotland.

They added: "Lower ferry fares, in the form of RET, were long promised and quickly introduced by the SNP Government and will this year be extended to inter-island services.”
