Sitting MP Angus B MacNeil has been confirmed as the SNP’s candidate for the Western Isles in the forthcoming general election.
Sole nominee Mr Macneil who was unanimously reselected by SNP branches within the constituency said it was a privilege to serve the people of the western Isles for the last ten years as MP.
He added: “I am delighted to be given the opportunity once again by the local SNP to seek the support of people across our islands in the forthcoming General Election.
“Just as the polls have moved dramatically towards the SNP nationally, we see the same with voters here saying they are moving from Labour to SNP.
"But we are taking nothing for granted.
“The SNP has a rock solid record of standing up for Scotland.”
Mr Macneil added: “It is completely unacceptable that people find themselves needing the support of foodbanks in a wealthy country. The fundamental problem is that the wealth is moving up the way and leaving more and more people in poverty.
“That is quite simply wrong, and it is these issues that the SNP have championed at Westminster and which I would continue to champion as MP.
“In January we saw the Labour Party vote with the Tories to continue austerity, with further planned cuts of 75 billion pounds, taking money from the poorest in society, and in a similar Labour/Tory pact they have voted to spend up to 100 billion pounds on the abhorrent building of new nuclear weapons.”
The MP said: “Cuts we see locally start off at Westminster.
“The SNP voted against further cuts and we voted against renewing Trident and these are the principles I will continue to follow.”
