Sitting MP Angus B MacNeil has been confirmed as the SNP’s candidate for the Western Isles in the forthcoming general election.

Sole nominee Mr Macneil who was unanimously reselected by SNP branches within the constituency said it was a privilege to serve the people of the western Isles for the last ten years as MP.

He added: “I am delighted to be given the opportunity once again by the local SNP to seek the support of people across our islands in the forthcoming General Election.

“Just as the polls have moved dramatically towards the SNP nationally, we see the same with voters here saying they are moving from Labour to SNP.

"But we are taking nothing for granted.

“The SNP has a rock solid record of standing up for Scotland.”

Mr Macneil added: “It is completely unacceptable that people find themselves needing the support of foodbanks in a wealthy country. The fundamental problem is that the wealth is moving up the way and leaving more and more people in poverty.

“That is quite simply wrong, and it is these issues that the SNP have championed at Westminster and which I would continue to champion as MP.

“In January we saw the Labour Party vote with the Tories to continue austerity, with further planned cuts of 75 billion pounds, taking money from the poorest in society, and in a similar Labour/Tory pact they have voted to spend up to 100 billion pounds on the abhorrent building of new nuclear weapons.”

The MP said: “Cuts we see locally start off at Westminster.

“The SNP voted against further cuts and we voted against renewing Trident and these are the principles I will continue to follow.”

“A vow was made by Labour, the Tories and the Lib-Dems together in the final days of the referendum campaign - a vow that polls show the clear majority of people across Scotland expect to be delivered. One of my aims as MP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar are to hold Westminster to account on these promises and to keep the pressure on the UK Government over the many issues that I see affecting families across our islands.

Local SNP’s Convener, Margaret Martin said: “I am delighted to confirm the reselection of Angus MacNeil.

“Angus has been a hard-working and respected MP for 10 years and there are a great many issues to be dealt with in Westminster that affect each and every one of us in Na h-Eileanan an Iar and the SNP, will always argue for Scotland’s interests on every one of these issues.”
