Comhairle nan Eilean Siar councillor, Calum MacMillan, has quit the SNP to join Alex Salmond's new political party.

Mr MacMillan is now a Alba Party councillor, representing the South Uist, Eriskay, Barra and Vatersay ward.

He previously served as deputy of the SNP Comhairle Group represents the South Uist, Eriskay, Barra and Vatersay ward on the council.

Mr MacMillan said he would continue to work with the SNP council group to progress projects and improvements for the Western Isles.

Addressing the system “designed to exclude the aspirations of all who support the principle of a nation for Scots” is his principal reason for joining Alba Party.

He wants to see the SNP’s Alasdair Allan returned as the next Western Isles constituency MSP while also confirming his support to the Alba Party in the regional list vote in the May elections.

Supporting the Alba Party is a “duty and a privilege,” he says.

Mr MacMillan stated: “Alba Party has a good purpose in seeking to gain a Parliamentary presence from the list system to the benefit of all Scots.’

Cllr MacMillan commented: “Albert Einstein and quantum arithmetic would fail to make sense of the manifest bias against Independence incorporated into the Scottish Parliament electoral process where - based on the most recent election in the Highlands and Islands Region - 14,700 has the same value as 81,600.”

Holyrood's voting system for regional votes means “22,800 has twice the value of 81,600 and 44,600 has three times the value of 81,600.”

He stated: “Having Alba Party candidates on the regional list to compliment SNP candidates in each constituency vote will help present a significant number of independence minded MSPs into the Scottish Parliament.”

Cllr MacMillan - who is a director of South Uist community landowner, Stòras Uibhist - advocates the principle of crofting tenure being extended throughout rural Scotland.

“People still live on crofts whereas sporting estates are devoid of people,” he stated.

He says Scotland’s surplus oil revenue should be used to fund infrastructure projects such as fixed link tunnels to connect all islands to mainland Scotland and improve the roads network in the Highlands and Islands.
