Heavy snow at mainland airports caused delays to Stornoway airport flights this evening.

Passengers on the teatime outbound Inverness plane did not arrive at their destination until around 11.15pm.

The Flybe plane departed late and then went to Glasgow first.

There was also some confusion if the Inverness leg would be cancelled.

Glasgow airport was affected by heavy snow lying on the runways.

Aircraft were grounded until the tarmac was cleared, holding up flights to and from Lewis.

The timetabled 7.25pm  Flybe departure from Stornoway was delayed for over two hours and did not arrive in the central belt until about 10.30pm.

Glasgow Airport said heavy snow showers caused disruption.

A spokesman said the “priority is ensuring its safe for aircraft to operate.”

There was more travel chaos for Glasgow passengers with snow affecting most routes throughout the city.

Further delays resulted from breakdowns and stranded vehicles blocking many roads.
