Interior passenger areas on Loch Seaforth

Lounge and public spaces inside new ferry

The new MV Loch Seaforth is due to cut 15 minutes off the present 2 hours and 45 minute voyage to Ullapool.

The vessel is designed to offers a more comfortable trip than the MV Isle of Lewis.

The hull has been shaped to better handle Minch waves while the machinery spaces should emit less noise.

Smoother, quieter voyage promised on new ferry

14 December 2014

Ships that pass in the mist: MV Isle of Lewis detours and gives a long blast on her whistle as she passes her successor, MV Loch Seaforth, one mile off Arnish.

Overall, a smoother and quieter voyage is promised.

Inside, the passenger accommodation block has been designed by interior consultants Steen Friis of Denmark.

The main passenger area is the central Arcade with coffee bar, children’s area and games machines.

High bar stools allow travellers a good view through the side portholes.

Larger lifts and toilets are installed.

There is more space between seating so wheelchairs are more easily manoeuvred.

The colour scheme of blues, greens, browns and off-white is based on the hues of the natural environment of the Hebrides.

Three back-up “engines” - really propulsion units - aim to keep the ship going on her regular timetable and speed even if one of her two main engines breaks down.

Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL), which will lease the vessel to the ferry operator said that the ship can reach about 15 knots with just one main engine.

Firing up one of the propulsion units can add at least another four knots taking her to full speed.  The two eight-cylinder main engines and three generators - total weight is just 151.5 tonnes- were made by Wärtsilä of Finland.
