Scientific ship, RRS Sir David Attenborough, has anchored off Tarbert after undertaking marine environmental surveys in the Minch.

The royal research vessel is also testing out science equipment in both deep and shallow water around the coast. Onboard are the now-famous “BoatyMcBoatface” submersibles.

Last weekend she was tracking off Lewis. This week she has steamed down and back up the Minch while conducting marine biodiversity studies.

She popped in to the Stornoway anchorage for three hours early on Friday before steaming south along the east coast of Lewis and Harris, detouring into Loch Claidh sealoch, in Pairc. Tonight (Friday) she is half a mile off Direcleit.

The vessel is also testing out hydrotreated vegetable oil as a low-carbon alternative fuel on one of the vessel’s engines during this voyage.
