The deputy leader of the Scottish Labour Party believes there is a  “silent majority” in the Western Isles intending to vote no in September’s independence referendum.

Anas Sarwar (inset) took Labour’s “battle bus” on the campaign trial to Lewis and Harris.

He said the big red coach got lots of cheers when it arrived off the ferry at Stornoway as part of a Highlands and Islands’ tour.

Anas Sarwar said: “We had a drive around the town first and saw the reaction of people - they were waving at the bus, giving us the “thumbs-up” and lots of big cheers.

“Speaking to local folk here, the message we’re getting from so many people is “thank goodness you’re out there.””

Mr Sarwar added: “Its very much the silent majority wanting to vote no and we are going to make sure that silent majority finds its voice” in the run-up to the referendum.
