Shops on guard over forged £50 notes                   25/7/14

Shops in Stornoway have been targeted by forged £50 notes.

Police warned businesses and islanders to be on their guard over fake money.

Sharp-eyed staff in a local pub spotted one fake note when asked to exchange it for smaller denominations of currency.

In another case, a town centre shop was said to be taken in by counterfeit cash.

A police spokesman said: “A 28 year old woman is to be reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with counterfeit currency.”

The arrested woman is believed to be local.
