An island youth who broke into a village shop has paid £500 compensation.

John Mitchell also undertook work for the community venture to a “high standard” Stornoway Sheriff Court has been told.

Mitchell - formerly from Point but now living in Aberdeen - previously admitted stealing alcohol and cigarettes from Buth an Rubha in Point, Lewis, in November 2015.

The youth also appeared on drugs charges.

He pleaded guilty to possessing small quantities of cannabis and ecstasy - said to be valued around £27 in total - in Stornoway last April.

Sheriff David Sutherland fined Mitchell £600 made up of £300 for the break-in and the same figure for the drug offences.
