Electronic navigation safety technology is to be used to study the potential impacts of shipping on whales, dolphins and porpoises off western Scotland.
Scientists for the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust will use an automatic identification system (AIS) transponder to track the movements of vessels in areas inhabited by marine wildlife.
They hope to gain new insights into how species are affected by vessels' movements and noise.
